At 23 years old, Tom “Durrrr” Dwan has achieved a level poker notoriety that very few, if any players has even come close to approaching. Seemingly, every other day, for better or for worse, Dwan is making some sort of headlines. Whether it was the bravado in which he invited all comers to take him on in the ongoing Million Dollar Challenge, the way he won the world’s largest single cash game pot for $1.1 million, or experience enormous huge swings playing online, Dwan is constantly in the news. Today, he is making headlines once again. After over a year of speculating whether it would ever happen, word broke over the weekend that Dwan has finally reached an agreement to join Team Full Tilt.

In announcing the deal, Full Tilt’s website is referring to Dwan as

“one of the most influential and successful players in online poker history.” In addition, Howard Lederer continued to say, ”Team Full Tilt doesn’t take adding a team member lightly. But, Tom Dwan has proven, through skill and dynamic play, that he will be a force to be reckoned with for many years to come.

It has been reported for months that Full Tilt had made several attempts to sign Dwan so it is somewhat surprising that he has actually signed up. Why the sudden change of heart? Well, after posting over $5 million in online earnings in 2008, it is no secret that 2009 hasn’t been nearly as good for him. At different points of the year, he has been down as much as $4 million and is currently down $1.8 million, and has been expending large amounts of energy trying to get back to even. It may be the case that he is realizing that even he needs to have some type of supplemental income to finance his playing. After all, when he sits down to play Gus Hansen, another Team Full Tilt member, Hansen is the one that gets a portion of the rake they accrue. He may have finally realized that he should be getting a piece of the pie as well.

The signing is a major coup for Full Tilt as Dwan’s games consistently draw the largest crowds in online poker as Dwan is seemingly the most commonly searched for Full Tilt’s ‘Player Search’ function. He now joins the team that consists of Phil Ivey, Chris Ferguson, Howard Lederer, John Juanda, Jennifer Harman, Phil Gordon, Erick Lindgren, Erik Seidel, Andy Bloch, Mike Matusow, Gus Hansen, Allen Cunningham and Patrik Antonius.

Dwan’s deal includes not only playing and rake back, he also has agreed to contribute to the site’s Full Tilt Poker Academy in addition to regular blogging duty. Full Tilt is banking on Dwan’s popularity to maximize a solid return on their investment. It seems like a win for everyone involved.
