The WSOP Could Add an All-Star Game

by AintLuck.com Poker Team

Major professional sports leagues commonly hold all star games where their most talented players compete in a special game. Apparently, WSOP officials are taking note of this idea since they recently sent out a Twitter post about how an all star game could be in the works.

Although the exact details of the all star game are unclear at this point, the Twitter post read as follows:

“Which 20 WSOP Bracelet-Holders would you like to see compete in an All-Star game? Stay tuned…”

The all star game could be another interesting side event on the WSOP schedule that would be in the same vein as last year’s Champions Invitational. In the 2009 Champions Invitational, 20 former WSOP Main Event champions played for a 1970 Corvette. 1983 WSOP champion Tom McEvoy ended up winning the Corvette.

It’s hard to speculate what players would be invited to a 20 person all star game, but rumor has it that the 20 players could be picked through an Internet fan vote. Of course, the problem with this is that non-deserving players could get into the all star game. This type of scenario occurred last year when fans voted for Poker Hall of Fame nominees and Internet sensation Tom Dwan was selected. And while Dwan has had several good finishes in major tournaments, he comes nowhere close to meeting the “test of time” requirements set forth by the Hall of Fame Committee (he was born in 1986).

Whatever the case may be with the selection process and tournament details, Harrah’s officials have a while to decide on the format. The 2010 WSOP kicks on May 28th with a $500 Casino Employees No-Limit Hold’em tournament along with the much-anticipated $50,000 Player’s Championship on the same day. The WSOP Main Event will once again follow the same format where most of the tournament is played in July with the final table finishing up in November.
