Over the past several years, no other organization has done more to fight for the rights of the poker players, both live and online, than the Poker Players Alliance (PPA).  They have lobbied Congress, formed special interest groups, held rallies, and contacted lawmakers all in the name of making poker an accepted hobby by all.  They have just announced the latest high profile member to join their always-expanding group, none other than the “King of Media” Howard Stern.

The announcement was made just as National Poker Week gets set to kickoff on Saturday, July 25th.  In making the announcement, PPA Chairman Alfonse D’Amato said,

“I can’t think of a more fitting way to kick off National Poker Week than having my friend, Howard Stern, become a member of the PPA. I thank him for having me on his show this morning and for supporting the PPA’s efforts to protect the freedom of American citizens to play the great game of poker at the time and place of their choosing – a freedom Congress voted to take away.”

Stern seems like the ideal member as he is a loud recognizable voice with an enormous listening audience and fan base.  In addition, in the past Stern has proven time and time again that he is willing to test the limits of free speech as he has pulled countless stunts on his radio and television shows regardless of the sanctions he receives as a result.

Yesterday, D’Amato was Stern’s guest on his show in which he discussed National Poker Week and the game of poker in general.  The PPA is remaining at the forefront of attempts at changing legislation, most recently buy placing an online letter to Congressmen on its website titled “Please Protect My Right to Play Poker on the Internet.  The letter can also be printed out and sent to any Senate of House of Representatives member.  In addition, the PPA has amassed 355,000 signatures to its latest petition.

The addition of Stern to its membership is expected to have a domino effect as Stern’s loyal following is known to rally behind things which he supports.
