Father of POTRIPPER, Phil Tom, victorious at WSOP

by Poker Team

Philip Tom, not Phillip, took home first prize at Event 11 of the 2008 WSOP, the $5,000 No Limit Hold’em tournament, by beating a field of 360 players and overtaking Greg “FBT” Mueller in the final heads-up match. For many, Phil Tom is not really a household name in the poker world, but what is ironic about Tom’s win on Sunday is that Phil Tom is the father of Scott Tom, the former Absolute Poker executive who was supposedly the person behind the Absolute Poker scandal where his player alias “POTRIPPER” had access to other player’s hole cards while playing at Absolute.

Final Table at Event 11 of the 2008 WSOP

Phil Tom earned $477,900 and earned his first ever WSOP bracelet by winning the $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em Shootout. This was Phil Tom’s best finished in a major poker tournament as his previous best was 22nd, and previous best finish at the WSOP was 30th. The final table was just 6 players as opposed to the standard 9 player final table. Each player started the final table with the exact same chip stack of 1,000,000. Here is what the final table looked like:

Seat 1 - Greg “FBT” Mueller
Seat 2 - Thomas Roupe
Seat 3 - Philip Tom
Seat 4 - Leo “Superfluous Man” Wolpert
Seat 5 - Tim “Tmay420″ West
Seat 6 - Sirous Jamshidi

What is interesting about this final table is that Greg “FBT” Mueller, a Full Tilt Poker sponsored pro, was actually at the final table last year and finished in second place. He could not redeem himself and as the eliminations were happening, Mueller found himself head to head with Phil Tom as the final two battled for the championship.

Final Hand of the 2008 $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em Shootout

Flop: Jh - 9d - 3c

Turn: 5h

Mueller went “All In”

Phil Tom: Ad Jc

Mueller: Js 8h

River: Kd

Phil Tom won the pot with a Top Pair and Top Kicker. Mueller again won 2nd place but took home a reasonable $298,638. This is the second time that Phil Tom had busted Mueller out as in last year’s WPT, Tom eliminated Mueller with an Ace-King to Mueller’s kings.

According to CardPlayer an onlooker to the tournament said that “his raises and re-raises worked so well, it was almost as if he could see everyone’s cards.” As stated earlier, Philip Tom is the dad of Scott Tom, the former executive of Absolute Poker superuser account “PotRipper”, accused of being able to view player’s hole cards while playing on his account at Absolute. What an ironic twist of events!

Phil Tom

Philip Tom, the “chairman”, is a resident of Las Vegas, Nevada and has over $612,000 in career poker winnings after his victory at the 2008 WSOP Event 11. He has finished in the money 6 times over his career.
