Poker World Mourns Loss of Negreanu’s Mother

by AintLuck.com Poker Team

News broke yesterday that the mother of one of the world’s most recognizable and more beloved poker players around, Daniel Negreanu, has passed away. Best known more for being charming and witty at or away from the poker table, Negreanu’s signature smile is sure to be gone for the foreseeable future.

In a message posted via Twitter, Negreanu wrote:

‘Best mother and woman in the world is gone. Mommy died last night in her sleep. She doesn’t have to suffer anymore. She’s been thru a lot.’

On his personal blog, in a post titled “Mommy is Gone”, Negreanu eloquently elaborated:

“Last night at about 3:30am in her sleep she passed away at the hospital where she’s been suffering since February. 10 months of the most brutal torture. Just no way to live, and there is a sense of relief that she doesn’t have to suffer anymore…Some say she smothered us too much. I don’t give a crap what any of those people think, she smothered us with unconditional love and you can never do that “too much” no matter what these crackpot therapists say. I’m a Momma’s boy and I’m proud of it. Women like her, you just don’t see that often anymore. Full of life and laughter, super friendly to any and everyone. All her neighbors loved her. Not just liked her, but I sensed that they loved her for real. I’m so lucky to have been raised by her. So many people, I think, loved her so much because they wished they had a mother like her. I genuinely believe that. I was lucky. “

What Negreanu was alluding to was the fact that throughout 2009, his mother’s health was in a steady decline following a stroke and mild heart attack she had suffered in early February. She had been suffering for quite some time and the woman who made appearances in the audience rooting on her son during his deep tournament runs was no longer able to do so, instead, spending most of her time in the hospital. Things had been so touch and go that on a couple occasions, she had to be on life support. Tragically, at the time of her passing, Negreanu was en route home from London to see her but he arrived too late.

Since the news broke, fans and poker observers have been showering Negreanu with condolences and words of encouragement all over the internet message boards, a testament to how popular the Canadian pro is. Here at Aintluck.com, our thoughts and prayers are with them as well.
