Poker Player's Alliance - PPAThe Poker Player Alliance (PPA) which has grown to over one million members strong, is continuing to lobby for the legalization of online poker and is capitalizing on the attendance of delegates and members of Congress at both the Republican and Democratic Nation Conventions by holding charity poker tournaments to benefit the Paralyzed Veterans of America.  Both events are being held to promote goodwill toward poker, especially online poker, which has been heavily scrutinized by the United States Congress.

PPA at the Democratic National Convention

The PPA’s event, “Poker at the Ballpark”, has become a star studded event attracting such recognizable names as Seth Meyers, Paul Rudd and Sarah Silverman.  Also in attendance will be poker pros Andy Bloch, Barry Greenstein and Erik Seidel.  The tournament is being held today, August 26th at 10:00pm at Coors Field, home of Major League Baseball’s Colorado Rockies and will run concurrently with the Democratic National Convention.

PPA Executive Director, John Pappas said, “The PPA is honored to have these talented actors join us in raising much needed funds for those who have fought to protect our country. We look forward to a great event and encourage everyone to donate to this worthy cause and thank our nation’s veterans for their service.”

The tournament was originally supposed to be featuring a seat in the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event, valued at $10,000 which was to be awarded as the grand prize to the charity tournament winner.  But, Colorado’s state law reads, A “poker tournament is considered illegal if it has an entry fee, awards prizes, involves luck and the participants don’t share a common interest beyond gambling.”  Charity tournament organizers have now announced that no prizes will be given and instead, they will give away more than 175 door prizes via random drawing.

Poker Player Alliance at the Republican National Convention

The Republican National Convention will be held September 1-4, 2008.  The PPA has teamed with the American Gaming Association (AGA) to host a charity poker tournament at the RNC which will also benefit the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

PPA Chairman, Alfonse D’Amato, former three-time Republican Senator for New York, has personally endorsed McCain for President.  The PPA will be reaching out to members of Congress who have been in opposition to legalized internet gambling in the United States.  The Republican Party took the lead to pass the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in 2006.

The charity poker tournament at the RNC will be held on Wednesday, September 3rd at 116 First Avenue North in Minneapolis at 10:30pm following a VIP reception which starts at 10:00pm.
