Party Poker removes High Stakes Tables

by Jeremy

Party Poker is no doubt one of the biggest online poker sites in the world. Keeping this in mind, people were shocked to hear that Party is getting rid of their high stakes tables. Getting into the specifics, the site will no longer offer games above $5/$10 No-Limit and $30/$60 Fixed-Limit stakes.

While a number of murky reasons have been given for why Party Poker has disbanded their high stakes scene, the common thinking is that they’re desperate to reverse declining traffic numbers. While Party remains a force in the poker tournament world, their cash game traffic is down 50% from the previous year. Obviously though, Party didn’t mention all of this in their official reason for removing high stakes tables. Their statement read as follows:

We have removed some of our super high stakes games, this decision has been taken to make improvements to our poker ecology and in our players best interest. We believe this change will improve the action at our tables and is in the best interest of the poker room as a whole.

The phrase “improvements to our poker ecology” alludes to the possibility that Party Poker wants to move towards more of a recreational player model. And this might be a smart move for Party at this point since plenty of other sites are trying to become more recreational player-friendly to counteract PokerStars.

After all, Stars is controlling much of the online poker market right now, but they’re heavily infested with pro players. So trying to differentiate from PokerStars is definitely a good idea at this point. Furthermore, it might help sites like Party Poker recruit more beginners and infuse some new money into online poker.
