by Poker Team

Mike Mike “the Mouth” Matusow (a member of Team Full Tilt) took home his 3rd WSOP bracelet yesterday at the $5,000 no-limit 2-7 draw lowball tournament, Event 18 of the 2008 WSOP.

The story over the past several weeks at the WSOP has been the enormous playing fields at all the events. For example, event #2 had 3,929 entrants. The 2-7 lowball tournament was a bit different as only 85 players competed in this event which included a huge list of well-known poker professionals including: Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, Phil Ivey, Phil Hellmuth, Erik Seidel, Lisandro, Barry Greenstein, Erick Lindgren, Tony G. and David Benyamine. The combined earnings from these pros at the WSOP is almost $7Million with 8 WSOP bracelets between them.

Tom Schneider - 162,000

Final Hand at the $5K no-limit 2-7 LowBall Tournament

Even though Lindgren held a considerable chip lead at the final table, his chips slowly dwindled and he was finally knocked out by Matusow after going all in. The final heads-up play was between Mike “The Mouth” Matusow and Jeffrey Lisandro.

Matusow raised all-in with: Q-8-7-4-3

Lisandro called with: 9-6-5-3

After Lisandro’s call, he asked for one more card. What he needed was card lower than a Queen that did not pair his hand. After a considerable amount of time deciding whether he should ask for another card to try to improve his hand, Matusow decided to stay with his hand.

Lisandro’s last card was a Queen and he lost the match as the crowd cheered wildly at about 3 A.M at the Rio. “I never gave up, I played with the greatest patience I could. I’m really proud of myself,” Matusow said afterwards.

Matusow earned $537,862 for his first place finish and Lisandro earned $347,704 with his second place finish. Matusow had won an unbelievable match against some of the biggest names in the poker world. A well deserved win for Mike Matusow.

Mike “The Mouth” Matusow Bio

Mike Matusow was born in Los Angeles, California in 1968 and is one of the most successful poker professionals in the world. The nickname “the Mouth” was coined not because of Matusow’s mouth, but rather his outspoken personality. As a child growing up, he was never afraid to voice his opinion and often times the result was a battered and bruised body from other kids in the neighborhood. An avid competitor, Matusow is also an excellent bowler as he often rolls games of 290 or more and has actually rolled a perfect game of 300.

Matusow entered his first WSOP back in 1997 and finished an impressive second in the Omaha 8 or better tournament to fellow poker pro, Scotty Nyguen. His first WSOP bracelet came in 2001 where he won playing the $3,500 buy-in No-Limit Hold ‘em tournament. Mike has $6.5 Million in career earnings, 51 cashes, 5 first place finishes, and now 3 WSOP bracelets. Mike plays poker exclusively at
