Leonardo DiCaprio Set to Star in New Poker Movie

by Poker Team

Look out Rounders, another poker movie is coming to town. With the 2009 World Series of Poker in full swing, there is a healthy buzz in the air with the news that a new poker movie, this time starring Hollywood heavyweight Leonardo DiCaprio, is in the pipeline.

The still untitled film, reportedly centers around internet gambling companies in Costa Rica. While many poker movies have fallen short of expectations, this one is expected to be just as good since the screenplay is being done by Brian Koppelman and David Levien, the same duo behind the aforementioned “Rounders.” However, it seems that the movie is just in its preliminary stages of development as DiCaprio has over 21 movies in the works and it is not known how far down the list this one would be.

The specific storyline is not yet known, and whether the film will focus on online poker, casinos, or sports betting is still unknown. The chosen setting is of particular interest however as many top poker sites are in fact located in the Central American country. For example, Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet are both based out of San Jose, Costa Rica while PokerStars and Doyle’s room operate there as well.

It will be interesting to see if the movie is looking to cash in on the poker boom, or rather show the darker side in light of the recent cheating scandals that have taken place.
