Irishman Jimmy McSweeny Wins Irish Poker Festival

by AintLuck.com Poker Team

It should come as no surprise that with a name like Jimmy McSweeny, the Irish bred poker player was very proud to represent his home country in the recent Irish Poker Festival. With a record-breaking 832 players the event was the largest ever for the poker festival organizers. Sponsored by Ladbrokes the event was a huge success and promises to return next year with even more players and a bigger prize pool.

Heading into the final table as the chip leader by only a small margin with 2.9 million in chips, McSweeny had some stiff competition. With two other players nipping at his heels with 2.6 and 2.2 million chips, he had to fend off a few bad beats to make his way to the winners circle and collect €100,000 in the process.

Heads up play began between McSweeny and Bo Ericshen with McSweeny holding a comfortable lead. There was little doubt that match would end soon with the outstacked Ericshen obliging and pushing all in holding A 9 vs. the pocket sixes of McSweeny. The board brought no help and McSweeny was quick to graciously thank his opponent and the hosts of the event en route to collecting his new paycheck.

The final table results:

1st - Jimmy McSweeney - €100,000
2nd - Andrew Roberts - €65,000
3rd - Bo Ericshen - €35,000
4th - Hugh Whelan - €25,000
5th - Nick Heather - €20,000
6th - Ian Smith - €15,000
7th - Steve Johnson - €12,000
8th - Barry Hand - €10,000
