James Bord claims Europeans better than Americans

by Jeremy

Apparently winning the 2010 WSOPE Main Event makes you an authority on what nationalities are best at poker since James Bord recently had plenty to say on the subject. The Englishman spoke to MatchBook about the subject since they’re currently running odds on who’ll win the 2011 WSOPE Main Event.

Interestingly enough, Bord says that he doesn’t think any American has a chance to win as he said, “I don’t think an American can win the bracelet, Europeans are now far superior. We used to look up to the U.S players back in the day, but those days are now long gone. I’m prepared to put my money where my mouth is and refund any losing bets up $500 if an American wins.”

Maybe Bord didn’t get a good look at the odds since an American - Jason Mercier - is leading the MatchBook odds for the 2011 WSOPE winner at 4/1. In addition to this, Erik Seidel (5/1) and Phil Hellmuth (9/2) are also strong bets to win.

Apparently Bord must have a lot of money to spend since the $300/$600 and $400/$800 mixed games specialist is willing to put up a lot of money on a European player winning.

But before any US players get too bent out of shape over Bord’s controversial statements, it appears as if this might be more of a marketing ploy for MatchBook than it is a real prediction of who will win the event. This sentiment is echoed by MatchBook’s statement as they said, “James statement about American players may be a controversial one but we stand by his offer and feel its going to be a year for a European despite players like Hellmuth and Seidel playing out of their skins in recent tournaments.”
