Daniel Negreanu Calls Annie Duke Horrible Names in Interview

by Poker Team

Daniel Negreanu has always had this reputation of a friendly, somewhat wholesome guy when the cameras are on him. After all, he laughs and jokes around with a lot of other players at the table, and doesn’t get involved in the little disputes and spats that plague many pros.

So maybe it’s the battering he took on High Stakes Poker or something else, but the smile is gone from Kid Poker and he’s taken the gloves off. In a recent interview Negreanu did with Poker Player Magazine, he talked about several interesting subjects including a few choice words he had for Annie Duke.

The beginning of the interview had Negreanu talking about how he didn’t think that Phil Hellmuth would ever win another bracelet because everybody is playing No-Limit Hold’em now and players are just so much better. He also said:

“Hellmuth is never going to win a Stud event because he doesn’t understand the games yet. In the limit portions he’s just so far behind in terms of knowledge.”

Then Negreanu went on to explain how all of the old school players are nowhere close to the younger players in terms of strategy. And he was specifically speaking of the Tournament of Champions event that took place during the WSOP. He told the magazine:

“First, I was shocked at the number of votes it took to get in, and then to see that none of the young guys got in. Most shocking was to see Sam Farha and T.J. Cloutier in there – I love them both, but it was like I had gone back in time. To put it simply I was playing poker with guys who are simply not as good as the young guys today.”

And while this was all entertaining, the best part of the interview came up when Negreanu talked about the WSOP Ladies event and how guys played in it. For the most part, he spared Shaun Deeb and his buddies by merely saying they were “misinformed” with their actions that included wearing dresses and using tampons as card protectors.

However, the brunt of his rant was aimed at Annie Duke who said these guys were sticking up for sexual equality and that the event should be abolished altogether. Negreanu then stuck up for the Ladies event saying that it’s for 1,000 women who like playing poker with each other and not dress-wearing guys. He finished up by saying:

“What irked me is that this woman has the audacity on her website to call herself ‘the best female poker player in the world.’ So on one side of the coin she’s fighting for, ‘Oh, we’re all equal, there shouldn’t be any gender thing,’ but when appropriate she decides to call herself the best female poker player in the world. So I’m like ‘how offensive are you, you f***ing c***? You want to say you’re speaking for women, yet you claim superiority over all of them.’”

These comments are some of the wildest ones ever made by Negreanu in his career. It will be interesting to see what Duke has to say in response to this.
