2015 WSOP Starts in Less than a Week

by Jeremy Olson on May 23, 2015

It’s been all quiet on the poker news front over the past couple weeks, probably because most players are getting ready for the 2015 WSOP, which is now less than a week away.

We won’t have to wait long for a headliner, because the festivities kick off with the $565 buy-in “Colossus,” a reentry tournament with a $5 million guaranteed prize pool. Many expect the Colossus to easily break the record for the largest poker tournament ever, which is held by the 2012 WSOP Main Event (8,733 entrants). Given that the Colossus offers rebuys, it’s almost a guarantee that it will smash the 2012 Main Event’s entry total.

Another highly exciting tourney will no doubt be the Event #55 $1,500 DraftKings 50/50 No-Limit Hold’em, where half the field will get paid. This is encouraging because many pros have argued for events that reduce variance and pay out more players.

One more tournament that I’m really excited to see is the Event #67 $10,000 Dealers Choice, which will feature 19 eligible variants. There was a dealer’s choice event last year that went over really well among the experienced pros. So it appears that WSOP organizers have created a bigger and better version this time around.

Of course, we can’t forget the 2015 WSOP Main Event, which will be different this year. Instead of guaranteeing another $10 million top prize, like the one that Martin Jacobson won last year, each final table participant will be guaranteed at least $1 million (assuming number of entrants equals 6,683 or more). Pros like Daniel Negreanu argued that this was a better format because it creates nine millionaires, and it appears that Negreanu and others’ wishes have been granted.

The 2015 WSOP kicks off on May 27th, so you can get ready to enjoy some exciting poker action once again!
